I Give Up!

Mar 17th 2008 07:52 am

This morning I gave up on a book I had been reading, and enjoying, all weekend. The reason I won’t finish the book is that one of the main characters, one of the heroes, is about to do something so surpassingly stupid that, if this were an actual/physical book instead of an ebook, I would have already thrown it against the wall.

I won’t tell you the title of the book. But here’s a brief description of the set-up.

Hero A, the one about to make the worst mistake of his life, is involved in a hot and heavy affair with sexy yet insecure Hero B who has only just realized that he is in love.

After their most recent and most intense sexual encounter — the one that brought Hero B his revelation — Hero A called Hero B to say how much he missed him and other sentimental stuff. But Hero B didn’t answer so he had to leave a message.

Five days or some such length of time goes by and Hero B never calls back or acknowledges in any way Hero A’s feelings.

Except Hero B never got the message.

Which doesn’t stop Hero A from jumping to the conclusion that B wants him only for sex not for a real relationship.

So while A is feeling like crap (because of course he too is in love by now) who shows up but A’s supposedly straight best friend and used-to-be-fuck buddy. The BF who used to be an FB is also feeling pretty crappy and down-trodden and, in the midst of weeping on A’s shoulder, asks if A wants to fuck him just to make him feel … wanted. *huge eye roll*

And guess what Hero A is going to do?

Guess further who just got the lovey-dovey message Hero A left on his phone nearly a week before? And who, even as A is about to fuck someone else, is on his way over for a grand reunion? And who, instead of said reunion, is going to get a big ‘ol nasty surprise when he finds his lover balls deep in another guy’s ass?

Arg!

I just want to slap Hero A.

But since I can’t slap a fictional character or even kill him off since this isn’t my book, I just won’t finish the story. And I probably won’t buy/read any more of this author’s work either.

Not because Hero A is about to cheat on Hero B. But because the author didn’t give me a solid motivation for Hero A to lose faith in Hero B. I got only a big misunderstanding and an unreturned phone call. And that’s not enough.

Damn. I was liking this book too.

I don’t know if we’re thinking of the same book or not, but are you sure he goes through with it. I read a similar book, can’t think of the name right now but he stops it and doesn’t continue on with sleeping with him. Ok. you need to private e-mail me the name of that book.

I actually read that book over the weekend. It gets even better; you haven’t gotten to the bit where the perpetrator’s pulled out of nowhere in a way that demonstrates that the reader couldn’t possibly have guessed, with a motive that’s old and cliche’d.

That’s okay, I guess — ten pages later it’s promptly disposed of, and you could’ve replaced all ten pages with the phrase “hit by lightning” and it would’ve worked just as well.

    ‘Twas a touch disappointing, really.

    Zot,

Well, I did go back and continue with the book and you’re right about the identity of the villain. There’s no way the reader could have seen that coming. Struck by lightning is a good way to describe it too. When I learned who it was I went “what the hell?” And that’s never a good thing. *g*

It might have worked better if the author hadn’t tried so hard to tie the resolution of that plot thread to the romance so directly.

I have another couple of chapters to go and I can see the HEA coming. I just haven’t decided if I’m buying into it.
